Kidnappers Demands Ransom of 15 Bitcoins

The South African kidnappers of a 13-year-old boy have demanded a ransom of 15 bitcoins (BTC) cost about $120,000 for the boy to be released.

According to The Guardian report, the 13-year-old boy was taken in the town of Witbank in the eastern province of Mpumalanga while he was playing with two friends near his home. Witnesses said a Toyota Corolla pulled up nearby and the little boy was dragged in and driven away.

Police spokesman Leonard Hlathi said on Tuesday that "we are investigating a case of kidnapping that happened on Sunday in Witbank. There was a demand that was made that the parents should deposit cash in bitcoins."

local media said the ransom note was left at the scene reading...

"This is a kidnapping... We demand ransom of 15 bitcoins to be paid into the below bitcoin wallet address to secure your child's safe release- non-negotiable."
Local media quoted the official saying that the boy's parents were going through trauma, they don't even know what this bitcoin is. They're devastated and you can see they're worried and asking themselves: "Where is our son?"

According to the police, this is the first kidnapping case that the ransom will be demanded in cryptocurrency in the country.

Last year December, the managing director of crypto exchange EXMO Pavel Lerner was released by kidnappers after a $1 mln ransom was paid in Bitcoin to a gang who had abducted him while he was leaving his office in Kiev, Ukraine.
