Are you planning to work as a driver in Dubai? or do you want to relocate to Dubai as a resident and be able to use your valid driving license there, here are tips for you to go about it.


You may be eligible to transfer your existing driving license, without having to take a driving test or going to a driving school, if you have a valid driving license from some countries. You have to be a citizen of the country I will be listing below and you must be a current resident Visa holder in UAE.

The countries from which citizens can transfer their driving licenses are given below:
United Kingdom, United States, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Poland, Germany, France, Greece, Ireland, Japan, Italy, South Korea, Kuwait, Qatar, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Oman, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Switzerland and South Africa

Note: Some countries listed above will require translations or consulate letters, they are:
  • Canada: A letter from the Canadian Consulate in Dubai to verify that the license is genuine is required, before transferring your license.
  • Greece, Canada, Cyprus, Poland, Turkey, Japan & South Korea will require a translation of their driving license from their respective consulates.
Documents & Payment needed:
  • Passport for residents (Original &Copy)
  • Residence permit (Copy)
  • Current driving license (Original & Copy)
  • Translation of driving license (for some countries)
  • Consulate letter (for Canadians)
  • 1 passport photo, eye test certificate & AED 360 for the transfer fee and opening a driving file. Also required is a no-objection letter from your sponsor.
Step to take:
  • Get an eye test done in any hospital, clinic or optician. Give them 2 passport-sized photos and mention that it is for a driving license.
  • Take the documents mentioned above to the Dubai Traffic Department Driving License section in Al Ghusais from 7:30am to 2:30pm on a working day.
  • Fill up the application form & submit all documentation to the officer in charge.
  • Take signed documents from the officer & pay AED 360 to the cashier.
  • submit all documents at Data Entry Counter, in a few minutes later, your license will be ready.
