Twitter Plans To Develop An Open And Decentralized Social Media

  • Twitter is funding a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media.
  • The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard, said Dorsey
  • Why is this good for Twitter? it will allow us to access and contribute to a much larger corpus of public conversation, focus our efforts on building open recommendation algorithms that promote healthy conversation, and will force us to be far more innovative than in the past
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced on his twitter hand that the company would create "an open and decentralized standard for social media," Twitter plans to support an independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers and decentralized standards for social media.

The new team would follow a model similar to Square Crypto, a bitcoin-focused entity separate from Dorsey's fintech unicorn Square.

Dorsey hopes social media networks will operate more like email, which allows users to send messages to one another even if they aren't on the same service, because of their shared open protocol. It is why Yahoo Mail and Gmail users can email between one another, or why a user can build their own email server and contact others. In contrast, every major social media service is a closed platform, meaning users can't communicate with the user of another or build their own social media service that is interoperable with an existing player.

According to Dorsey Jack in his tweets, BlueSky would be working with existing decentralized standards or would consider creating a new one if necessary.

"Square is doing exactly this for bitcoin with SqCrypto. For social media, we'd like this team to either find an existing decentralized standard they can help move forward or failing that, create one from scratch. That's the only direction we at Twitter, Inc. will provide." said Twitter CEO

We'd expect this team not only to develop a decentralized standard for social media but to also build an open community around it, inclusive of companies & organizations, researchers, civil society leaders, all who are thinking deeply about the consequences, positive and negative.

It will take the Bluesky team years to develop this protocol, he said and the aim is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard.
