Whatsapp's new privacy policy backlash, led to mass migration of users to Telegram and Signal

On Thursday, Whatsapp asked its two billion users to accept a new privacy policy that would allow it to share more data with parent company Facebook.

The announcement got a lot of criticism from a lot of people for forcing users to accept the changes or see their access to the app cut off from 8 February.

The move by WhatsApp has led to the mass migration of users to Telegram and Signal to make more than 2.2 million users left the messaging app for other apps within 24 hours as a better alternative.

Among those that see the privacy policy as offensive is the Turkish government as they call on their citizen to dump WhatsApp and use local messaging services instead.

According to middleeasteye, Ali Taha Koc, head of the Turkish presidential Digital Transformation Office, on Saturday criticised the new terms of services.

The distinction between EU member countries and others in terms of data privacy is unacceptable! As we have citedin the Information and Communication Security Guideline, foreign origin applications bear significant risks regarding data security, he said.

" That is why we need to protect our digital data with local and national software and develop them in line with our needs. Let's not forget that Turkish's data would stay in Turkey thanks to local and national solutions".

He called on Turks to use a national and local app such as Bio and Dedi.
