Central Bank of Nigeria roll out USSD code for e-Naira

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has rolled out the USSD code to enhance the fast adoption of its Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).
The Nigerian Central Bank Digital Currency e-Naira has recorded 4 billion Naira in transactions after launching in October 2021.

The Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, gave the update at the grand finale of the e-Naira Hackathon held in Abuja.

According to his statement, 200,000 transactions valued at 4 billion have been made on the platform. Also, the app has reached 840,000 downloads, with about 270,000 active wallets comprising over 252,000 consumer wallets and 17,000 merchant wallets. As reported by Vanguard Nigerian newspapers.

However, the figures seem not encouraging enough and the CBN plans to get 8 million active subscribers by launching the USSD transaction.

USSD code for e-Naira

The implementation of the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data code (USSD) will give a large number of people who have no access to Android phones and the internet the chance to access e-Naira.

With the USSD code *997# for e-Naira, Nigerians can open e-Naira wallets and carry out transactions by dialling the code on any phone.

According to Emefiele, many other African countries have been contacting CBN for enquiry on how to follow suit as government and financial institutions believe that CBDC is superior to cryptos and stablecoin.
